'Stephen Malkmus' band' →
rendit: hman: Oh, so now it’s his band?  Inneresting… Pavement ‘to reform for New York gigs in 2010’ - Stephen Malkmus’ band reportedly set for US shows (NME) As long as they refer to the Jicks as Janet Weiss’ band. Every time I go to the bars, I think of The Jicks’ Baltimore because of those lines about shark eyes and dilettantes because people want to talk the shit that gets...

On bearing arms:  dearcoketalk: Don’t worry. It won’t turn you into a republican. It will, however, give you some perspective. It will help you understand that this country’s problem isn’t the gun toting. It’s the fuckwits. Your rage is misdirected. Aim that shit at stupidity, not firearms. Get pissed at Fox News and all other purveyors of institutionalized ignorance. Don’t blame our...

How Mariano Rivera Dominates Hitters →
I don’t even like baseball but this video from the NYT was very interesting. Also confirms that baseball is an over analyzed sport. The video shows exactly where every single pitch Rivera threw in 2009 was located at two particular points: where hitters see the ball and where it crosses the plate.

rendit: whatafoolbelieves: I looked through a sports mag and found all the basketball, football and baseball players to be different, but the hockey players to be the same from the days of video games.  There must be something about the ice that preserves them, I was thinking when the recruiter asked me into her office. From a great story. Read it.

Regulators Failed to Address Risks in Oil Rig Fail-Safe Device The last line of defense to prevent a blowout is blind shear ram. The Deepwater Horizon rig had one blind shear ram. Rigs made after the Deepwater Horizon have two.  Blind shear rams are THE part in a well’s blowout preventer (BOP) setup. A BOP is over five stories high. It has to do it’s job in the extreme conditions...

65 Years Ago my Dad shot this film along Kalakaua Ave. in Waikiki capturing spontaneous celebrations that broke out upon first hearing news of the Japanese surrender. Kodachrome 16mm film: God Bless Kodachrome, right? I was able to find an outfit (mymovietransfer.com) to do a much superior scan of this footage to what I had previously posted, so I re-did this film and replaced the older...

merlin: Not many things in this world better than totally making shit up, then watching awesome people make it into a real thing.  Very envious of this phenomenon. My favorite, Mommy Needs a Minute.

Cognitive Surplus: The Great Spare-Time Revolution →
Somehow, watching television became a part-time job for every citizen in the developed world. But once we stop thinking of all that time as individual minutes to be whiled away and start thinking of it as a social asset that can be harnessed, it all looks very different. The buildup of this free time among the world’s educated population—maybe a trillion hours per year—is a new resource. It’s what...
